What are the Main Symptoms of Autism?
Do you know the typical signs of autism? Almost every parent with a child who could be autistic wants to know the symptoms to look for. Diagnosis can be difficult because of the fact that you can find similar symptoms in non-autistic kids too. We will discuss a few of the more common autism symptoms here.
A typical symptom seen in young children is a tendency toward temper tantrums for no apparent reason – crying, acting out things, etc. Yet, tread carefully here because non-autistic children can sometimes do this, too.
It is therefore necessary to get a professional diagnosis. Many autistic children, however, will become upset or even hysterical, while parents or teachers cannot understand what has caused this outburst. The fact is, autistic people do not respond to their environment in a typical way, so their behavior is often unrelated to anything external. Also, there are times in some autistic people that this behavior can be harmful, and in such people sometimes medication is required for the violent behavior. Many autistic people are extremely sensitive to light, sound and other sensory information. For this reason, they may be upset or frightened by bright lights, loud noises or even spicy foods or certain objects because of their shape or texture. Some scientists have the opinion that the autistics brain works in a different manner. But, there are some people who do have this sensory input sensitivity, and they are not autistic. What is also very worthy of note is that the very highest functioning known autistics share this similar problem with lights and sounds, etc. In general, the best way to deal with this is to try to reduce any upsetting stimuli in the environment of autistic people.
There certainly have been times when an autistic child is thought to be deaf, but it’s just either a misdiagnosis or the child has not yet been diagnosed, yet. Autistic children can have an usual way of talking; plus they often seem to ignore normal language and are typically quiet. The undiagnosed autistic child is just having an immense struggle with people who do not undertand what is going on. This is not as common as it used to be, as more people today are learning about autism, but it points out how difficult it is for autistic people to communicate with the world around them. Most autistic children are not responsive to traditional education methods, and they need to be taught through special educational classes.
We have looked at some symptoms of autism that are fairly common and that are usually apparent in early childhood. Each child or adult with autism will not have the same symptoms, and there are other differences that need to be considered; and that’s why the treatment has to be individually created for each person. Autism is not completely understood, and there are vigorous debates about its cause(s).
