Autism is on the rise simply because the numbers of diagnoses have been greater over the years. Autism can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms vary, they are shared with other medical conditions, and so the obvious course of action is to have your child evaluated by a specialist. Please continue reading to discover three typical symptoms of autism that are most common.

Failure to imitate parents is the first symptom. A normal child will imitate almost everything they see right down to smiles and sounds. This is in fact a very early stage of autism, autistic kids don’t often mimic things. Babies will smile if you smile at them. It’s a fact that we learn by watching as we grow. Even though this is normal beginning development not many autistic kids pick it up. The autistic child often won’t ever learn even the most simple behaviors that normal kids learn by imitation. Autistic kids don’t often speak at an early age if at all an they tend to communicate in ways that are difficult to understand. Light, sound, and other sensory input sensitivity are also seen in many autistic children. Sometimes lights, sounds, or even certain tastes can produce a high level of fear in an autistic child. Some scientists have the opinion that the autistics brain works in a different manner. Not everyone who is very sensitive to lights and sounds, however, is autistic. But this condition with sensory input also exists in people with Asperger’s Syndrome, and they are considered the highest functioning form of autism. In general, the best way to deal with this is to try to reduce any upsetting stimuli in the environment of autistic people.

Amazing as it may sound, a child who does have autism, but has not been diagnosed, can sometimes be mistaken for being deaf. The thing about it is that they usually don’t speak, don’t respond to being spoken to, and if they do talk it sounds different or unusual. If a child is like that, and actually has autism, then it’s a shame that people will consider that child to be deaf and treat him or her as such. Education and awareness of autism in children has reduced, apparently, the incidence of this kind of ignorance among parents and teachers. Autistic children, unless they are very high functioning, often do not respond to conventional teaching methods, and must be placed in classes that are tailored to their needs.

Because there are so many varieties of autism even the most seasoned professional can find it perplexing. The causese are varied and noone can really nail the causes down. The symptoms of autism we have been looking at here are only a few of the more common ones. Most parents with autistic kids will focus on finding a treatment plan that meets the needs of their child.
